Known to “gladden the heart and mind”, Borage Oil is very versatile carrier oil, great for your skin and great for your body. Borage Oil is made from the seeds of the Borago officinalis cold-pressed extraction (read more about the importance of cold-pressed extraction on our Rosehip Seed Oil post). Borage oil provides one of the highest levels of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that works as a powerful anti-inflammatory. Which is not found abundantly in the human diet and some people opt for the supplementation.
Due to the high levels of GLA, Borage Oil, can be an important tool on the treatment of a wide range of illnesses: rheumatoid arthritis, chest congestion, cough, stress, depression, heart diseases, hormonal imbalances, including also menopause and PMS symptoms (like breast pain or tenderness and anxiety), and the list goes on.
When it comes to skincare, Borage oil will not let you down! Suitable for all skin types, with a very light texture and emollient properties, this oil is gentle even on the most sensitive skins. Borage oil is often used for hair and skin disorders due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and softening properties. Great for soothing your skin and defrizzing your hair, but also recommended for more aggravated conditions, such as hair loss, red, itchy rash on the scalp (seborrheic dermatitis), eczema, and acne.
GLA has been shown to correct deficiencies in skin lipids (oils) that are caused by low levels of delta-6-desaturase activity. When the skin cannot produce enough protective oils, the result is dysregulation of the immune system, increased inflammation and specific immune responses that result in skin flare-ups, including those typical of eczema.
